Remember, clicking on SUPERFOLDER STOOKINESS is the best way to see ALL the origami SFs have posted! You’ll Never Guess What’s In A Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte (Hint: You Won’t Be Happy). Updated 4/6/2015 (see bottom of post). I really love the smell of pumpkin (especially in the Fall), but, there is at least one seasonal pumpkin treat that I will never order and that’s the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. With more than 200 million sold to date, these drinks sell like hotcakes this time of year, and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said it “still ranks as its most popular seasonal beverage”. But, does anyone know what’s really in it. I found out, and I’m going to break it all down for you here. But first, I want to mention that I get riled up when restaurants refuse to disclose their ingredients, because we have the right to know what we are eating and drinking. I’ve tried for years to get ingredient information from Starbucks and it’s been a bit frustrating to say the least. If you’ve ever tried emailing their customer service for ingredients you probably know what I’m talking about. This week, we emailed them asking for the complete list of ingredients in the Pumpkin Spice Latte and this was their response:. “The Pumpkin Spice Latte is of pumpkin and traditional fall spice flavors combined with espresso and steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spice. If you ever have any questions or concerns in the future, please don’t hesitate to get in touch”. After several more emails back and forth, they were still refusing to share the ingredients:. While we understand that some customers would like to know the nutrition information for their specific customized beverage, unfortunately we are unable to provide this level of detail for every beverage customization request. The beverage information that is available on Starbucks. com reflects the beverage offerings currently on our menu with the most common customization options. For a company that prides itself in its transparency. it’s unbelievable to me that this is how they respond to customers who ask for information about what’s in their drinks. After really putting the pressure on, I was finally able to get the complete list, but it wasn’t easy. While they list some ingredients on their website, they still do not list the ingredients in their most popular items: their drinks! This includes all of their lattes, frappuccinos, macchiatos, smoothies, etc. Starbucks doesn’t even publish the ingredients in their “Kid’s Drinks” – keeping parents completely in the dark. If you have a food allergy, their allergen information isn’t available online either. How’s that for transparency. Besides trying to get an employee to spill the beans, pretty much the only way to get the ingredients in their drinks is to go into their online store and search for each of the individual components that make up these drinks, but they are not all listed here. Quite frankly, this is a pain. This also requires you to know all of the components that make up the drink that you order. For instance, the Pumpkin Spice Latte isn’t just espresso, syrup and milk. If you order it the usual way on the menu. it contains espresso, pumpkin sauce, steamed milk (or soy milk), whipped cream and spice topping – and these each come with their own ingredient list. Another way to get ingredients is to email and call customer service, or to ask a corporate contact at Starbucks (if you’re lucky enough to know one like me). We used all of these avenues to get the ingredients in this drink, and you know what. We got different ingredients. Overall, the ingredients were similar, but there were slight differences. We initially called Starbucks customer service and they said that all of the syrups sold in their online store are the same ones that are used in the restaurant, and that specifically the Pumpkin Sauce is the same. The online version here says Pumpkin Sauce contains high fructose corn syrup. They also divulged the ingredients in the whipped cream, spice topping, and soy milk. Shortly thereafter, we also received a response to our email inquiry and this is when things became shady. This time the ingredient list they sent over didn’t have any high fructose corn syrup on it. Rather, it was replaced with “sweetened condensed nonfat milk”. After a couple email exchanges, they seemed to confirm that HFCS is an ingredient:. “Yes the sauce that we sell online at www. starbucks. com is that same sauce that we use in our stores. I understand you concerns about high fructose corn syrup being used in the Sweentened Condensed Nonfat Milk. Please be aware that product information is provided to us by the suppliers who manufacture food and beverage items for Starbucks Coffee Company. Variations may exist due to periodic changes in formulations. While we attempt to provide product information that is as complete as possible, product changes or new product introductions may cause this information to become outdated or incomplete. Products may vary from location to location”. I wasn’t done yet. I also contacted a PR rep at Starbucks whom I had been in contact with previously and asked her to send me the ingredients. According to her, “The condensed milk is sweetened with sugar (no HFCS)”. As you can see, this makes for a very confusing customer experience, and I still don’t really know if it contains high fructose corn syrup (or not). Why won’t they just publish ingredients online and end the confusion. They obviously know what the ingredients are in each of their drinks, so I see no reason for them to hold back from publishing them (in their entirety) online just like they do for their food items. This would make it easy for their customers to know exactly what they are drinking. I believe the reason that they’re dragging their feet is because they don’t want you to know about the harmful additives in their biggest selling items. Case In Point: You’ll get 2 doses of Class IV Caramel Coloring in Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Latte. You’ve probably heard me talk about caramel coloring before, and that’s because I think it’s one of the most hazardous chemicals being added to our food. Although it sounds harmless, food safety and consumer watch dog groups say it is not. There are four different types (classes) of caramel coloring and two of those types contain the dangerous substance 4-methylimidazole (4-Mel). Starbucks uses Class IV Caramel Color, considered the most harmful type that contains 4-Mel, in many of their drink syrups and sauces. It’s even in their whipped cream. Why Starbucks should stop using Class IV Caramel Coloring immediately:. It’s created in a laboratory by reacting corn sugar with ammonia and sulfites under high pressure and temperature, which produces the byproduct 4-Mel. A U. S government funded study found that feeding mice caramel coloring IV (which contained 4-Mel) increased their risk of developing lung cancer and leukemia, at every dosage level. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies 4-Mel as “possibly carcinogenic to humans ”. Any food or drink that contains more than 29 micrograms of 4-Mel requires a cancer warning label In California (under Prop 65) that says, “WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer. ”. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) petitioned the FDA to ban caramel coloring in 2011 due to safety concerns and the cancer risk of allowing this ingredient in our food. It has no nutritional benefits and is only used cosmetically to improve the appearance of food and drinks, yet there are safer alternatives available to food manufacturers. It’s sometimes added unnecessarily to food and drinks that are naturally brown or that are not even visible to the consumer (e. baby vitamin drops). It’s the most widely used food coloring in the world, which makes it easy to consume excessive amounts. Thankfully, the FDA is currently reviewing its safety and GRAS status, due to a Consumer Reports study that found excessive levels in many popular drinks. In previous correspondence with Starbucks, they told me they have no plans to remove the ingredient and, “in all instances where the color is used in our beverages, the level is well below the No Significant Risk Level (NSRL) allowed by California’s Prop 65, regarded as a conservative evaluation system, and safe to consume”. I haven’t seen any testing results that show the exact levels of 4-Mel found in Starbucks drinks, so we just have to take their word for it on this one. Also, even if the level is below what’s allowed, what if someone has a Vente (Starbuck’s largest size) with the double dose of caramel coloring within the syrup and whipcream – what’s the amount of caramel coloring then? Even if the levels are below what’s permitted in California, it’s still not safe. In the opinion of toxicologist Dr. Urvashi Rangan. “There is no ‘safe’ level of 4-MeI, but if you have set a threshold, it should be well below the Prop 65 level (29 micrograms/day) – and more like 3 micrograms/day”. Roasted coffee itself has been shown to contain trace amounts of 4-Mel. Couple that with the fact that this coloring is in just about every processed food you can imagine, so you may be cumulatively eating more of this stuff than you realize – and no amount is safe. Would you really care if the syrup and sauces that they squirt into your coffee are colored brown? It’s going into brown coffee anyhow…. it’s totally ridiculous to me that caramel coloring is even considered a necessary ingredient and that Starbucks doesn’t ask their suppliers to completely remove it. Where’s the pumpkin. After reading the ingredients in the Pumpkin Spice Latte, I can tell you that there’s absolutely no pumpkin. Instead, you’ll be drinking this:. A Huge Dose of Sugar – A lot of it. Order up a non-fat grande and you’ll get served 50 grams of sugar. Is it a pick-me-up from the caffeine, or all that toxic sugar. Monsanto Milk – Even though over a hundred thousand customers are demanding it, Starbucks refuses to serve organic milk (at all locations). Due to consumer pressure, they stopped using milk from cows injected with growth hormones several years ago, but their milk still comes from cows that are fed genetically modified feed all day long – which is really supporting Monsanto and the biotech companies. When cows survive primarily on a cheap grain diet (corn, soy, alfalfa, cotton) it’s bad for the health of the animals. which is contributing to the overuse of antibiotics and the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. If they made the switch to organic milk, or even offered it for that matter, it would ensure that it didn’t come from cows grazing on GMO grains or injected with antibiotics. Pesticide Residue – Starbucks doesn’t serve organic coffee in most locations. Non-organic coffee is considered one of the heaviest chemically treated crops in the world, especially when it’s imported from developing nations that allow pesticides that are restricted in the U. due to health concerns, such as Chlorpyrifos. Natural and Artificial Flavors – Since this drink contains absolutely no pumpkin, this is where all that flavor comes from. The problem with both artificial and natural flavors is that their sources are proprietary and you never really know what they are made from. Preservatives and Sulfites – Which may cause allergic reactions or asthma attacks, and is linked with DNA damage. If you’re vegan, I have a specific warning for you. Many of you may be shocked to find out that when you order a Pumpkin Spice latte with soy milk, it’s still not vegan. This is because the Pumpkin Sauce contains condensed nonfat milk, and many Starbucks employees don’t realize this and have misinformed customers. This is yet another reason that Starbucks Corporate should be transparent about what’s in their drinks by publishing complete ingredients online. You’ll also get more than you bargained for if you order up a soy latte, because the Starbucks “proprietary” organic soy milk contains carrageenan – which is linked to gastrointestinal inflammation and cancer. It also contains another dose of added sugar, preservatives and natural flavors. Complete Ingredients in Starbucks “Pumpkin” Spice Latte:. Milk , Espresso (Water, Brewed Espresso Coffee) , Pumpkin Spice Flavored Sauce ( Sugar. Condensed Nonfat Milk. High Fructose Corn Syrup or Sweetened Condensed Nonfat Milk (Milk. The more people that know the truth, the more Starbucks will be forced to make a change. Thank you for your activism and spreading the word in advance. Together we can change the food system. Hopefully in the near future, we can have treats like these without worrying about the toxic chemicals in them. Update 4/6/2015. I received an email from Starbucks representatives that they have started to remove caramel coloring level IV. “we recently transitioned the vanilla syrup in our US and Canada stores to a new formula which is free from caramel coloring. We prioritized vanilla as it is an ingredient in our whipped cream, so with this one change we removed caramel coloring from many beverages. We are actively working on the rest and don’t have a specific timeline to share at this time. ” Go Food Babe Army Go. InformedPerson (to food junki). Sugar is not toxic, to say such a thing is utterly absurd. Humans have eaten sugar since the dawn of man. 50 grams of sugar is still below the EU’s RDA of sugar (90 grams. ) How do you think pumpkin spice lattes are not bitter whatsoever, when Starbucks plain coffee is very much so. The recipe you provided would not make anything close to a pumpkin spice latte. If you don’t like the ingredients in it, then buy a different type of pumpkin spice syrup. They sell all sorts of alternatives at a number of places, including Williams Sonoma (Theirs is quite good. Carrageenan does not cause cancer, and most people don’t have much of a reaction to it. It is in so many things, including most non-dairy milk alternatives; that it is almost unavoidable in some food categories. The vast majority of people in the world, especially people of European descent like myself, have no adverse reaction to sulfites. Wine has sulfites, as do many beers, ciders, and meads. Only a very small sect of people have a sulfite allergy. I admit, I would rather Starbucks use organic milk. But, conventional milk makes more business sense, and they can save billions a year using it. If you think sugar is toxic, sulfites are allergenic to all, coffee is loaded with pesticides, and carrageenan causes cancer; then why would you buy Starbucks products then. Most people know/expect it to have these ingredients. If you don’t want sugar in your coffee, drink organic espresso shots. I rather use organic coffee, I often do use it; but it is not as readily available as conventional coffee (Especially for Nespresso. And all whipped cream as carrageenan. Organic, heavy cream, regular, low-fat, non-dairy, and fat free variants all have carrageenan. Even the local, grass-fed, organic whipped cream I buy from Whole Foods has it. Most baristas are unhygienic and do not wash their hands after going to the bathroom according to a recent study I saw today. And that is one of they many reasons why am just buying a Nespresso. If you just buy some organic milk, pumpkin spice syrup from Williams Sonoma or elsewhere, a Nespresso (With a built in or separate frother. ), then you can make your own pumpkin spices lattes. Healthy Gal (to InformedPerson). You are not so informed and need to read up on your facts. Everything Food Babe stated is true, and are things you should become more aware of. 1 out of 3 Canadians have cancer, and this is not just because it “simply happens”, it’s because of what’s consumed, environmental toxins etc…. It is truly scary to know that some of the ingredients being used in processed drinks and foods contains a large variety of sketchy ingredients. They are used because they make the food taste better, and mainly because they are cheap. You should be avoiding sugar (which feeds cancer), nitrites (which feeds cancer), and carrageenan (which feeds cancer). Of course it’s impossible to avoid everything, but making mostly healthy choices allows your body to get rid of toxic items much easier if you have them only once in a while. Thank you Food Babe for this informative article. kindelan (to InformedPerson). You surely are being paid for dispersing lies. Do you work for a sugar company, why would you go to all the trouble of promoting a substance that is harmful to one and all? How many teeth have you lost, how’s your jaw bone structure, how about bone density. You say sugar has been around since the dawn of history, or something like that, really, since 510BC but it wasn’t available until 1700 when the average yearly amount per person was 4 pounds per year. But something was happening as sugar use increased, health problems that never existed before started showing up, many, many dental problems and if there are dental problems there are bone problems. Your comment is pure nonsense and you went to a lot of trouble to overwhelm we savages who just don’t “get it. ” In Alaska Eskimos committed suicide due to turning to sweets Western Diets introduced, they leap in the bay and drown since the paid was unbearable, so bad they’d kill themselves. Sugar, HFCS, etc. are industry tools to hook us, but we get hooked on stuff that ruins our minds, body and nerves. You really are behind times, like out of corporate mentality where the most the heads of such places top the list for psychopaths, they are number one, lawyers #2, and the rest are controlling professions, ending with civil servants and, oh yes, cops and clergy are number 6 and 7. You come across as ignorant or industry protective, both aren’t need if we’re to make progress and turn the health problems we face around. As side note, 250 pounds of chemicals are sprayed per acre to grow coffee beans. We are heading the oblivion if we keep going as we are or as you advocate. Sugar, chemicals, processed junk, it’s madness. Jason (to InformedPerson). I’m with you Informed. The war on sugar is insane! If we’re getting technical, yes, sugar feeds cancer. You know what else feeds almost exclusively on sugar? Your brain. Fact. If you don’t eat enough sugar, your body will manufacture the molecules that make it up. That… or you die. Cheers. Bianx (to InformedPerson). Yep, sugar isn’t the problem…it’s all you crazy folk thinking it is. MODERATION is the key and eating a balanced diet (hello veggies, hello fruit and OMG you are full cream milk, I might drink you!). Basic nutrition hasn’t changed for hundreds of years, problem is the generations have. Fast food, tinned food, easy meals. Go back to basics – simple easy answer! Oh and don’t give me that crap about mineral depleted soil blah blah blah I’ve already done my research & I’m ok with adding a Greens Balance along the way. Bil (to InformedPerson). Fantastic content! Would do again. tiff (to InformedPerson). This whole article is out of proportion, but you are mistaken on the dangers of excessive sugar. A healthy woman should aim for around 25 grams of sugar a day. A soda contains 40 and other drinks continue much more. Sugar is the leading cause of diabetes. The grand rule should be everything in moderation. Foster (to InformedPerson). Sugar really is not the problem, People that abuse their right to consume as much of it as they want is what causes all the problems, Get off your butts, Exercise and cut back a little bit, Sugar is not the problem, you are. why not just be honest about what is in it? I don’t understand. HFCS is in a lot of foods and the companies display this, if you put it in your product be honest about it. There are new rules for food labelling in the EU and people say it wont be followed. Why can’t we know what is in a product esp allergens. Hi Food Babe, I’ve been Vegan for just over 1 year and I’m livid at the amount of non vegan ingredients used in things that should be vegan. I enjoy a Starbucks a couple times per week and I recently discovered that a lot of the syrups aren’t vegan. It seems the staff are as much in the dark about any ingredients and unfortunately I’ve found that a lot of staff don’t understand what Vegan is ? Thankfully (here in the UK at least) they use Alpro soy, so I only stick to plain old soy lattes now. I think the rule of thumb is, if it’s processed, it’s not Vegan. Thank you for this article. ?. I think I do understand why companies don’t disclose all information. It’s not just because their hiding dirty facts on how they prepare. If that’s the case, then that’s just plain BS. But sometimes, with tough competition, it’s not easy for them to share information as other competitors might try and do their own version of their product. But yeah, if they’re putting something that could be dangerous to health, they definitely should find an alternative. Thanks for the information. For some time I have experienced allergy reactions from Starbucks lattes. Since the reaction (itching on ankles) came about 8 hours after I consumed the product I never suspected it. However, through trial and error and elimination I have been able to produce the same reaction repeatedly by consuming pumpkin spice or other flavored lattes. Perhaps this is anecdotal, but I’m very suspicious now. If I avoid their flavored drinks, I don’t have the problem. I’m just curious which one of the ingredients is causing this and if other people have similar reactions. I should know better but when you are depressed you do stupid things. Yesterday I didn’t have time to make my own coffee so I bought a medium-size pumpkin spice Latte without cream at Starbucks sipping it while doing my grocery shopping. I have been on a gluten free diet for over 10 years and finding lately many so-called gluten free foods are bothering me so I have been trying to avoid them and GMOs too. Almost immediately, my upper abdominal area started bloating up but I still drank the coffee. I didn’t eat much that night because my stomach was bothering and around 12:30 at night, it really hit me hard and I really suffered. My upper abdominal area was so bloated and hard as a rock and I didn’t know if the discomfort was coming from my gallbladder or liver but both hurt so bad and the pain went around my lower right back. Every breath I took was more painful and I thought I was going to need to call 911. I had tremendous gas so I took a probiotic and some aloe vera juice but nothing helped the extreme discomfort I was feeling. I started feeling nauseous and had to vomit a few times last night. I finally got up and put a heating pad on that area and fell back to sleep on the couch until I had to vomit again. I don’t know if it was the coffee or not but I felt good until I drank it. Today I still have bloating and tenderness near my gallbladder and liver and have no appetite. What a time for this to happen because I can’t eat much right now. Delza909 (to Donna). It sounds like cholecystitis to me, I’ve seen these same symptoms 8n many if not majority of people with gallbladder issues. If you have issues such as gallstones and consume anything that irritated the gallbladder it will trigger an attack. Example, dairy, coffee, cream, oils etc. I hope that by now you’ve been able to know what that was if it has not happened again. If it’s persisted it’s worth checking out. food companies do not care about your health period! they only care about your money. Most Americans are stupid, lazy and irresponsible and simply dont care, flapping their lips and talking trash is more important than knowing anything or having an education and especially the mentality to eat correctly. if you eat or drink corporate junk food youll eventually get sick and suffer bad health at a later age and you will regret it. If you actually stopped for 1 second to realize how cheap simple easy & healthy it is to grow and consume your own food all year round you wouldnt be stupid enough to eat food laced with poisons and toxins that only line the pockets of greedy despicable lying individuals of these corporations ” criminals” that work within them will take your money, lie to you while you pay the biggest price. Love it. Thanks for the Pumpkin Latte warning. Because Starbucks is not up front will warn people about their lattes. That is what bothers me, they are not upfront. That’s a beware sign to me. Like with GMO. I believe that Starbucks is owned by Pepsico. Pepsico also owns Frito Lay who admittedly uses GMOs in their products, citing that the FDA has not found them to be dangerous or harmful. They also own Quaker, as well as several other brands. It would be worthwhile to look at their website to see what all products they do own and stay clear of all of them. Non alarmist (to Karon). No they do not. Do some research before you post. Karon (to Non alarmist). To Nonalarmist: It seems we have a difference of opinion, but if you would look at the Pepsico website under “Top Global Brands”, I believe you will see Starbucks listed. If you visit the Frito-Lay website, you will find a little blurb on there about GMOs. They state that yes, their products contain them because they have not been proven by the FDA to be detrimental to health. I have done my research, and strongly suggest that you do the same before you post. Bob (to Karon). Pepsi does not own Starbucks. Even their website just says that they “formed the North American Coffee Partnership to jointly develop ready-to-drink coffee beverages. ” Pespi did not buy Starbucks. From Pepsico’s wikipedia page: PepsiCo also has formed partnerships with several beverage brands it does not own, in order to distribute or market them with its own brands. PREMJI BHANUSHALI. Starbucks uses chemicals to decaffeinate and is not transparent about it. Direct Contact Decaffeination. In the direct contact method of decaffeination chemicals (other than water) are used on green coffee beans (milled but not yet roasted) with the goal of dissolving and extracting the caffeine. A direct contact decaffeination method uses chemicals in direct contact with the coffee beans and also may utilize supercritical carbon dioxide, which is carbon dioxide stored at a high pressure and temperature so it may be used as a decaffeination agent. The direct contact method typically involves steaming green coffee beans for ½-hour and then rinsing them repeatedly with ethyl acetate or methylene chloride for approximately ten hours. After the solvent is drained from the coffee beans they are steamed again for another ten hours with the goal of removing any residual solvent. Writing about Starbucks products is not a great topic to get into, especially when you are referring to something like the pumpkin spice latte. Everything in the latte is stated on the website, and its pretty safe to assume that there is espresso, milk, and flavoring in a latte. If you are uncomfortable with the ingredients in the latte, then don’t drink it. It really is that easy. Onto sugar- Sugar is, in a way, toxic. After obsessively Googling a lot of research, I finally got some Hunter Wellington Boots (for Christmas)! I love them. They’re amazing. Not particularly warm for winter (even with the special socks), but they’re still perfect for running errands, letting the dogs out, etc in the snow…and they’re more durable than my Uggs! And in the rain, they’re unbeatable. That said, there are just a few things to know before buying:. Try them on first in-person! But if you’re not able to, in my personal experience they run large. I’m usually a 10/10. 5 and I got a 9…they fit perfectly. “Original” is a matte finish, “Original Gloss” is glossy. There is a difference between “Hunters Original” and “Huntress” boots. Huntress is a wide-calf boot for ladies with a calf larger than 15″, or who like to wear layered socks. I went with the Huntress (pictured below). The Original Hunter are 2 inch taller than the Huntress…so if you’re really short, I’d go with the Huntress, the Original Short, or even try the kids sizes (for half the price!), otherwise I’ve heard it can chafe the back of your knees. There are not special socks for Huntress…if you order Hunter Welly Socks. they are a little bit taller than the Huntress boot because they’re meant for the Hunter Originals. I just tucked mine in, it worked fine. On that note, the Welly Socks have awkward seams on the feet. It feels a little weird when you’re first wearing them, but you get used to it. The tread is not ideal for ice (personal experience—ouch!). They are heavy on your feet. Very heavy. When I wear my brown riding boots (they’re the Franco Sarto “Poet”) after wearing the Hunters for awhile, I feel like I’m walking on air. Green is the “classic” color, but there are tons of fun color options available now. I got the brigh t red (pictured). I originally got the “Merlot” color, but it was a hideous purpleish-brown…not cranberry like I thought they’d be. I don’t recommend that color, but hey, to each her own. I’ve personally used Zappos with great success buying online. From personal experience, the free 2-way shipping and easy exchanges are definitely worth it (had to mess with sizing). They are also available at Nordstrom, Macy’s, etc. This is a pic of me in my red Huntress boots. You can tell they’re a little shorter than the Originals (for your reference, I’m 5’8″). This photo is embarrassing for 3 reasons: 1) I don’t have a full-length mirror so I am standing on the toilet in my daughter’s bathroom (ha!), 2) My bathroom is dirty, and 3) Yes, that is my 4 year-old folding washcloths in the bottom-left corner…I make her do chores whilst I take pictures of myself. #Momshaming anyone? ;). UPDATE: Check out my new post, Tips for Buying Hunter Boots. I’ve compiled a list of helpful tips from all your wonderful comments & reviews…thanks for all the input. ***And I’m super slow and I just got Instagram. Follow me at “nik. vee” =). Thanks! I finally decided to buy my first pair of Hunter boots and your tips are really useful. Chrissy - November 21, 2013 - 11:05 pm. Does anyone have any experience with the Huntress boots (height 14″, calf width 16. 5″) vs. the adjustable calf (height 16″–same as the originals; calf width: 15-17″)? After reading reviews/looking at photos, the ankle on the Huntress just looks so wide. I might like them on, but have had trouble finding a pair in stores, but kind of don’t like that the general shape is different than the original, vs. them just making the calves wider. If the adjustable calf ones really go to 17″ then it seems like the best of both worlds…. Nicole | Life So Lovely - November 22, 2013 - 12:21 pm. I agree with the ankle assessment…I haven’t looked at the adjustable calf. I actually lost 20lbs after having my son, so I might get the originals this Christmas! I will also check these out. =). Nicole | Life So Lovely - November 22, 2013 - 12:28 pm. Btw, the ones I’m wearing in the picture are Huntress! The ankle doesn’t bother me much. =). Dana - November 22, 2013 - 8:55 pm. Hi, so in your tips, you said the boots were heavy. I was wondering if you’ve ever owned a pair of Dr. Martens, and if you have, how heavy are they in comparison. Nicole | Life So Lovely - November 22, 2013 - 10:49 pm. I haven’t owned Dr. Martins, but I’d imagine they’re pretty similar in weight. The Huntresses are very sturdy and feel it…I wouldn’t say they’re too heavy though. MJ - November 25, 2013 - 1:37 pm. Bought my first pair of Hunters! Got the kids size 5 in glossy original… they’re perfect and can’t wait for the rain! haha! Thanks again for all your posts, it helped me not only save some serious time but I cannot be any happier right now and can continue my christmas shopping! yay. Nicole | Life So Lovely - November 25, 2013 - 3:40 pm. Aw yay! So glad I could help! Today I asked a random stranger in Target if I could try on her Originals, and they fit my calf (much to my surprise!). I think I know what I’m gettin’ for Christmas. Cassie - December 10, 2013 - 8:06 pm. I just got my first pair and love them! I got lucky and got them half off at Nordstrom! I’m 5’3″ and got the Hunter boots…my calves are 13. 75″ – the circumference and height are perfect! I usually wear a 7. 5 women’s and went with a 6 because I knew I wouldn’t be wearing the hunter thick socks. Cassie - December 10, 2013 - 8:10 pm. The hunters are lighter than Doc Martins…I don’t notice hem being heavy at all. Rose - December 17, 2013 - 6:05 pm. Hi everyone, i need some help lol, ive just got my first pair of hunters and i went for the huntress, my calf is just under 15″ and i quite like having the extra room in the top but i really do not like the big ankle on them. Does anyone know if the calf on the originals would fit my calf. Thanks in advance =). Jessica - January 2, 2014 - 12:38 pm. Thanks for this awesome post. I have been wanting red Hunter boots for awhile but I have literally been going back and forth between pictures of the Hunter original tour and the hunter original. Apparently there is a difference…. and then there’s matte or gloss. I think I’m into the matte. I am on the shorter side but I feel like the Huntress may hit me a little lower than I want…so I’m still stumped! I really want the socks too…so I am not knowing what to do! Can you tell that I cannot make decisions on my own? I do this with every part of my life…. Signe My - January 3, 2014 - 4:13 pm. Hey there :-) Im writing you from Denmark, sorry my spelling:-) and have a few questions :-) I’m 168 cm, and regular use a size 6. My legs a pretty normal ;-) What pair of Hunters/huntress and size should I chose? Have found a website: totalywellis. uk, is that a website I can trust. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 3, 2014 - 4:19 pm. Hi! I would always go with the Originals first if you fit in them, I don’t think the Huntress boot is as flattering. I’m not sure about the website, I would always buy from a licensed distributor because there are fake Chinese ones & knock off sites. Fran - January 3, 2014 - 9:44 pm. hi Nicole!I JUST ordered merlot Hunter boots, unfortunately i didn’t see your website before I ordered:( Is the color really that bad?I got them in a matte finish, will that make them look worse? Amazing blog btw!looks awesome. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 4, 2014 - 9:11 am. Thanks so much! As for the boots, it was just a personal preference, maybe you’ll like them? Initially, I thought they were more burgundy (like merlot…), but they were definitely more of a brown/purple. As long as you like them that’s all that matters! And worst-case scenario, you can alw get different ones. =). Stephanie - January 5, 2014 - 11:55 pm. Hi Nicole! Thanks for this post. I’m about to move to Boston from Texas and I have been having the most difficult time trying to decide on boots! I hear a lot about the Hunter boots though. I just don’t want my feet freezing off, so do you think pairing these boots with ski socks and leg warmers would help. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 6, 2014 - 8:14 am. Well, I think it depends how long you’re out and what you’re walking through. If you step in the snow you feel it pretty quickly since they’re not insulated at all, and your feet get very cold very fast. I personally didn’t think the welly socks help at all, but maybe ski socks/leg warmers might be different? I do love them for quick errands or a quick dog walk though, but I wouldn’t use them for an extended time stepping in actual snow. It’s so nice because they’re 100% waterproof and don’t stay wet (like Uggs). I’d recommend them either way since they’re great to have for the little jaunts out in the wintertime (esp. slush!). Let me know how you like them for winter use if you get them. Cortney - January 6, 2014 - 12:11 pm. Thanks for the post Nicole. I just received the original gloss tall today. I’m 5’4 but have short legs and my knee cap seems to scrape against the top of them. I wonder if they’ll pucker out a bit at the top as I wear them or if I need to swap to the huntress? They’re the perfect width but could stand to be slightly shorter. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 6, 2014 - 2:44 pm. Hi Cortney! The Huntress are definitely shorter, but do have a wider calf…that seems to be the trade-off. =/ I’m not sure what size you are, but maybe you could pull off a kid’s size as some others have suggested? The consensus seems to be that they’re a little shorter, but not wider…and on the plus side, they’re a bit less expensive. About your article ” 8 Things To Know Before Buying Hunter Boots “. Are they warm like these Ugg Bailey Bow Boots. If they aren’t cold weather boots, what weather are they best worn in? Also I agree about Zappos and the free two way shipping. I mention that same point on my blog. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 15, 2014 - 7:59 pm. Hi, good question! To answer it: No, they are definitely not warm like Uggs. Not even close. Personally, I have the Ugg Bailey Button Triplet boots ( ), and I love them because they’re SO warm…even without socks. The Uggs are phenomenally warm for winter, but aren’t the best when they get wet, even after waterproofing. I would hate to get salt on my Uggs! And the tread sucks. It sucks on the Hunters too, honestly. Back to your question, though. I would say that the Hunters are awesome for shorter walks in the winter (like errands, just to/from the car), or especially slushy weather. They do trap heat because they’re solid rubber (not any breathing), so as long as they’re not in direct contact with snow they’re okay. Anytime 100% waterproof would be ideal. For any other season, though they’re great for rainy or wet weather…anytime waterproof footwear would be appropriate. Tiffany - January 20, 2014 - 2:46 pm. I’ve also read elsewhere that you need to size down. Do you know anyone that had to actually size up? I usually where an 8 or 8 1/2 but I just tried on some Hunter Originals today and the 8 is definitely too small. The 9 was big – a bit lose in the heal and across the top of my foot, but I imagine with the Hunter boot socks, they’d feel more snug? My calves are less than 14″ so I would want to wear the originals with the socks. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 20, 2014 - 2:58 pm. I haven’t heard of sizing up, but go with what works best for you! Keep in mind, though, that the socks have awkward seams and are really not very thick or useful for warmth. Let me kow what you go with. Madison - January 27, 2014 - 4:20 pm. Super helpful thank you so much. Good stuff! I found that the cuff definitely helps too. =). Linda Langston - December 17, 2014 - 11:28 pm. Thanks for this blog I found it helpful as well all the comments by others. I have been shopping online & decided with all the variables to go try on boots at Nordstrom. I’m so glad I did. I originally thought I would buy the blk or graphite original tall hunter gloss. I first tried on the blk original hunter gloss tall with jean jeggins. They just received a shipment of these this morning as they had been sold out. I’m 5’8 and approx 200 lbs. The original tall fit fine but when I would sit down they would rub into the back of my leg which gave me pause but I did like them however, my husband said ‘hmmm that is just a whole lotta gloss’. He wasn’t a huge fan. I did like their sleek fit around the ankle and calf but I did feel a little stiff and straight legged. I couldn’t try on the huntress because the did not have any. Sales clerk said they are selling out as soon as shipments arrive. I did fit into the original tall calf area just fine even with a jeggin on. I was shocked as I heard they run skinny. I then tried on the blk short original gloss and fell in love. The fit was perfect and all I can say is I felt they were more ‘wearable’ versus the original talls if that makes sense. They were much more comfortable. Hubby loved them too! I tried them on not thinking I would like them I never was really considering them in all my online searching. I found the height of the boot perfect. not too short and not too tall. I felt the originals were too tall and I’m 5’8. I looked at the tall huntress display but did not try on(all sold out and no new shipment yet) and the ankle area just seemed bulky I thought they would be ‘kloppy’ but I could be wrong actually having them on. I am so pleased with the shorts in gloss! My advice would be to go try them on because each style fits different based on your body. Side note seeing the graphite in person it looks more gray with a lavender touch. It looked different in person than I thought it would. Natasha - December 22, 2014 - 6:29 pm. Hey, I bought a size 8 in the original short as everyone said size down and I’m usually an 8. My toe is right at the end. Should I have sized up to a 9 or is this how they should fit. Nicole | Life So Lovely - December 23, 2014 - 9:34 am. Thanks for your tips, Linda! Glad you found some you love, they’re so great. Nicole | Life So Lovely - December 23, 2014 - 9:35 am. Hi Natasha, if they’re uncomfortable I’d try a different size! It seems like different styles may fit people differently, I always recommend trying them on first. =). Erin - January 3, 2015 - 12:50 pm. Thank you so much. This was super helpful. I am short with big calves and I thought for sure I would not be able to buy these boots. I searched high and low for different reviews and suggestions, but could not find anything until now. I did not know about Huntress boots. These will be perfect!. Shannon - January 4, 2015 - 12:23 am. Hi-first off this is an awesome post. Secondly, I’m planning on buying the black adjustable back tall boots in black. I was wondering what you recommend: original or gloss? Are there pros and cons to each? (I’ve heard the gloss eventually turns kind of matte-ish anyways? Is that true?) thanks so much!. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 4, 2015 - 11:15 am. Hi there! I would say that the finish is a matter of personal preference! I’ve gotten the gloss for both my pairs. I love the shine! That said, the natural rubber does “bloom” and get this white, waxy film on it. It’s a pain! But I usually just wash it with some warm water and it’s fine. I do love the shine, so it’s worth it for me. Dayna - January 4, 2015 - 1:41 pm. Hi Nicole! Can you tell me a bit more about the socks from your experience? You said they don’t do much for warmth in snowy weather, but is that with the welly sock alone? Or are you wearing regular socks PLUS the welly sock and still find them not to be warm. Dayna - January 4, 2015 - 1:42 pm. PS, thank you for continuing to answer comments on this 2 year old blog post! You’re awesome. Dayna - January 4, 2015 - 1:56 pm. Sorry, one more thing! I read on your detailed post that the socks start at $30. Where might this be? I can only find them for $45 online and nothing less. Thanks. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 8, 2015 - 10:43 am. The fleece ones start at $30! I’m sure private sellers on Etsy might have them as well. =). Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 8, 2015 - 10:46 am. I wore it with the welly socks alone, I think they might have been too snug with other socks! In my honest opinion, I’ve never really worn them much. Lea - January 9, 2015 - 1:32 am. So glad I googled this before finalizing my purchase. This was very helpful, thank-you. MissLowry - January 14, 2015 - 8:21 pm. I may have commented a few weeks ago not sure. But anyways I went a couple days ago to Nordstrom and tried on the original tall boots and I could barely get them up on my calves, so they had one pair of huntress size 8 and they fit but made it look like I had fat legs that hung over when I sat down lol. So I was about to order the tall original with the adjustable back, do you think those should fit? Just wanted a second opinion because the huntress is a16″ calve and they were almost perfect but they say the adjustable go to a 17″. Oh and an FYI for others as far as sizing, I always wear a 9 and I had to go down to an 8. Yeah I probably couldn’t wear all the extra stuff with the 8 because they fit perfect but if I got a 9 I definitely couldn’t wear them in the spring without thicker socks they would flip off my feet for sure. But it depends what you want and what your looking to use them for. Sabrina - January 16, 2015 - 5:30 am. Just wanted to say “thank you”. This blog has really helped me. I live in a small town in Alabama. I’m going to go look tomorrow before ordering online but I’m doubtful that I will have much luck (unless I drive 60 miles to Birmingham). I’m over 5’9 and wear a sz 9 w/ a small calve. I’m going to try the original hunter in a sz 8. Fingers crossed! Mom 1st going to order matte black if the sz is correct I’m going to order glossy red (it’s on back order). My question is…do u know if I can use the hunter spray on both pair? It says not to use on metallic which either are… Just thought it was worth asking. Thanks again. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 17, 2015 - 1:48 pm. Glad I could help! The spray should be safe on the Gloss and matte—neither are metallic, so I can’t imagine it would be an issue! I’ve never used it myself, though, so don’t quote me. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 17, 2015 - 1:51 pm. Thank you for the tips! I also found that sizing down was absolutely necessary, my normal size (10) flopped all over the place. Anyway, aesthetically I agree with your assessment of the Huntress—I think it’s a less flattering silhouette. I don’t have any personal experience with the adjustable ones, but another reviewer mentioned that they slouch a little bit since the material isn’t as stiff. That said, it sounds like those might be the perfect solution for you! If you get them, shoot me a pic and let me know your thoughts so I can share! =). czarina - January 23, 2015 - 7:43 am. hi nicole! informative post! stumbled upon it after FINALLY buying a pair of hunter originals with the adjustable back. i’ve been eyeing them for a couple of years now and decided to bite the bullet. however, i’m normally a size 7. 5 and a bit on the wider side and went with the size 8. i found the 7’s fit PERFECTLY with my thin socks which i usually wear. the size 8’s are bigger for sure but tolerable… fits A LOT BETTER with the hunter socks, though i dont really like the look of them with the socks. my question is, do you find after wearing your boots for awhile now if they give a little? i know it’s rubber and dont stretch out as much as leather. but i’m torn on going back and getting the size 7’s but then that would mean that eliminates the option of me getting the hunter socks, even though i’m not a huge fan but it’ll make it slighly warmer in canadian weather. Nicole | Life So Lovely - January 23, 2015 - 9:26 pm. There is zero give with the Hunters Originals/Huntress! None. But honestly, I don’t think the Hunter socks are any warmer, though, they just have the logo. ;) I’d go with the 7’s if that’s what you like better. I don’t know about you, but I usually am just walking from the car & into a store in them. Haha. This was really helpful thanks. So no ice for these shoes got it. Lol. Ashley Morrow - February 9, 2015 - 11:43 am. I have a question Nicole, I am looking to buy a pair of boots. I usually wear a 9 and a half. Would your order a size nine or a size ten? I am wanting to wear thicker socks with them. Nicole | Life So Lovely - February 11, 2015 - 7:28 pm. Hi Ashley! Definitely get a 9, you’ll be fine! They run large, so socks should still fit no problem. I’m usually a 10. 5 and I sized down to a 9. The 10’s were massive. Enjoy. I love how a blog post from over a year ago has turned into an active “fashion tips” thread. Thank you! I have a question that maybe you or another reader could answer. I just bought my daughter the packable Tour boots online. She tried on regular boots in the store but they did not have Tour available for her to try on. They did say the sizing is the same BUT the welly socks are not recommended for Tour because they won’t fit. Anyone with Tour have advice on good socks? My daughter is going on a trip to England with grandparents and I’m sure it’s going to be raining a lot which is why I bought her these boots. I want to get her outfitted with the right socks too. Thanks. Sweet girl - February 16, 2015 - 11:42 am. Love the article. I have been looking for hunter so badly. I like the hunter green but love the gloss too. Confuse about what color to buy. Any good website you suggest to buy them. Nicole | Life So Lovely - February 19, 2015 - 4:53 pm. I used Zappos and had good luck with them. Nicole | Life So Lovely - February 19, 2015 - 4:55 pm. Honestly, the Welly socks aren’t all that special! Any thick pair of socks would work equally well. =) Hope she has a blast. debbie - March 30, 2015 - 12:26 pm. Just returned the hunter adjustable back. Loved the look without jeans tucked in but with pants tucked in I could see where the ankle ended. So I will try the huntress because the ankle is wider. Has anyone noticed this or am I just to picky. Nicole | Life So Lovely - March 31, 2015 - 12:45 pm. I don’t have those ones, but that would bug me too! The huntress is a great boot. Victoria - April 19, 2015 - 7:36 pm. I have wide feet and I’m worried if I order them, they won’t fit. Does the huntress boot or short original boot have wiggle room? Which type of boot do you think I should buy. Nicole | Life So Lovely - April 20, 2015 - 3:07 pm. Hi Victoria! I have found them to be very narrow, both in huntress and original. I’d highly recommend trying them on if you can. Melissa - May 3, 2015 - 10:14 pm. Been searching for a yellow pair of hunters for the past 8 months and cannot find any at all! I really wanted a pair for my wedding. Any suggestions on where to find some? I’m a size 7. Nicole | Life So Lovely - May 7, 2015 - 1:26 pm. Always online! I know Nordstrom and Zappos have them. Mei - June 8, 2015 - 6:11 pm. Hey love the tips on this site! I just tried on the hunters original tall in Costco and was torn between the size 8 or the 9. My toes were almost touching the end of the boot in the 8 so I went to with the 9 (which is my usual shoe size). Now that I’ve tried actually walking on the street with it, I feel that my heel keeps lifting up in the boot. Do you think that’s normal due to the weight of the boot or did I buy a size too big. Help! Love the boots though. They look so great on. Nicole | Life So Lovely - June 12, 2015 - 6:40 pm. That’s why I sized down! I found that my regular size slid around in the heel too much! I’d go with what’s most comfy for you. Thank you so much! This was really helpful. x. […] 8 Things to Know Before Buying Hunter Boots » Life So … – I love those! Very helpful page here! So my boyfriend got me the Original Tall Hunters in Matte Black (size 8- usually I’m a 8. 5-9). I’m 5’4 and 140lbs. I purchased the Welly socks for them but I’m finding I can’t wear the boots with jeans AND the socks. It’s like one or the other because it’s way to tight, which sucks! I’m debating on exchanging them for the Tall Adjustable Back Hunters as the calf is 15-17″, but I’m scared they will be to big if I choose to wear no socks and just jeans/leggings, etc for warmer weather. Oh help. ). Kayla Money - September 5, 2015 - 9:52 am. I know this is an old post but I was just wondering if you know the max calf width for the huntresses? I believe my calf is 17 1/2 – 18″ and I can’t find any in stores to try on. Nicole | Life So Lovely - September 7, 2015 - 4:14 pm. I believe it’s 16″, but I’m not certain! Sorry Kayla. Nicole | Life So Lovely - September 7, 2015 - 4:17 pm. Michelle! I’m sorry! Are they any better with leggings? Maybe you can check the socks with the adjustable back and see if it works! Check back and let me know how it goes. Amanda - September 11, 2015 - 8:45 pm. Thanks so much for your post! I’m an 8. 5 and wasn’t sure to size up or size down. Appreciate your input!. Morgan - September 14, 2015 - 9:10 am. I adore you for writing this- so helpful. Jennifer - September 17, 2015 - 1:29 pm. Hi there! Do you think, in your opinion, that a size 6 men’s glossy Original would work for a size 8-8. 5 woman who’s 5’7″ with a thin build. The cost difference is HUGE. Thanks. Nicole | Life So Lovely - September 17, 2015 - 1:37 pm. Hi Jennifer…honestly, I have no idea! But if it works out please let me know! I’d love to try it myself! Lol. Monica - September 21, 2015 - 9:24 pm. I’m curious does anyone’s foot still slide up in the back? I got a size smaller in the huntress because I have a 14″ calf and the regular was too small with jeans on. I’m normally a 9 so I got an 8. I’ve already exchanged my two pairs twice due to size issues. So before I exchange my third pair I would like to know from others is this a normal fit for rain boots and if anyone else had this problem? I must add I did put on thicker socks too with a back piece you can put in heels to make it fit better but still sliding. I think a size 7 may be to small. Jen - September 22, 2015 - 11:38 am. This article was very helpful since I am considering buying a second pair of Hunter boots and I wanted to know the difference between the Original Hunters and Huntress. I currently have a pair of Original Gloss Hunters in Merlot which I ABSOLUTELY adore. They are a dark reddish wine colour, with no hint of purple at all (I really dislike purple). I feel like maybe they sent you the wrong colour (Dark Ruby possibly) when you ordered Merlot? Dark Ruby is a colour that is very similar to Merlot but it has a purple tone to it which I really dislike… But as you said, to each their own. Nicole | Life So Lovely - September 22, 2015 - 6:21 pm. They slide in the heel a little no matter what! I preferred the tighter feel because of this. Sue - October 10, 2015 - 5:26 pm. So happy to have found your site Nicole! I just bought my first pair of original Wellies and absolutely love them. I’m also 5’8 and wear a size 9 shoe, I bought the boots in a 9 and they fit perfectly. My problem is it took me almost 15 minutes to get them off, I felt like I’d run a marathon, lol. After googling to see if this was a common problem I did find that I am not alone in this, my question is has anyone run into this and if so any suggestions on a remedy. I found some responses about purchasing a ” boot jack”, has anyone out there tried it? Thanks so much for all your help, love your site. Nicole | Life So Lovely - October 10, 2015 - 5:33 pm. Sue! Thanks for visiting! =) Are you wearing socks with them? (Sorry silly question!) But that’s the most helpful thing I can think of! I’ve worn them without, and it was far more difficult to get them off! Otherwise, I’m as stuck as you are! Any suggestions. Sue - October 10, 2015 - 6:39 pm. Thanks so much for your very quick response Nicole! It wasn’t a silly question at all! I was not wearing socks so I’m sure that made it much more difficult, it made them like giant suction cups! Im going to try them with socks and think I’ll invest in a boot jack, Amazon has them if anyone is interested. Thanks again, I’ll let you know how I make out and I’ve signed up to receive your blog. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Nicole | Life So Lovely - October 10, 2015 - 6:44 pm. Thanks so much, Sue! Let me know if the boot jack is useful! =). Ladies, It is very wise to get a good boot jack! A good boot jack will save you a lot of UN-necassary frustrations as well as nails and cramped calves. I do not have hunter boots, but a very good comparable pair. Which I love…:) The only about any natural rubber boot! They do not breath as leather boots. I love to wear my wellies natural and the feet do sweat and the boot becomes as a big suction when trying to get the boots, especially if you are not wearing socks, As I prefer not too, till winter. Ladies to save money on a Boot Jack. Just go to your local Western and English Tack Shop. There you can get a variety of styles and shapes. Plus save money. Hunters are great rubber boots, but remember that moist feet are like but suction cups in rubber boots that have any height. I prefer to to just get a boot jack and go commando. Smiles. bj. For those ladies that are prone to cold feet in rubber boots. Just a heads up. Those fleece socks are not very warm on those cold winter days. Go get a pair of Ugg Insoles to add to your hunters or any rubber boot. Rubber is a cold natural material that is non-breathing to the natural elements of our bodies heat. Plus, Remember that our feet are one the first parts of our bodies to loose “HEAT!” The higher you keep your foot off the cold natural ground, the warmer you feet and body shall remain. Hunters, You must remember are “fashion statement!” Not a means of staying warm. For Warm long periods of time…Seriously, If you are looking for warm feet and toes. Check out Sorels, Steagers, and other well insulated boots. Fashion is one thing! But Cold Feet can make for a long dull walk through those cold city blocks and country walks, that you wish, You’d stayed home with your Hot Chocolate. … God Bless, Ladies. bj.
